Functional Capacity Evaluations

Ultima has the capacity and resources to coordinate Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE) throughout British Columbia as well as various geographic locations throughout Canada. Should an Applicant not have access to a qualified Functional Capacity Evaluator, Ultima can coordinate and facilitate this process for the Applicant. The purpose of the FCE is to ensure that the Applicant has the sustainable capacity to safely carry out the duties of a Paramedic; and not place themselves, their colleagues, patients or property at risk of injury.  Components of the FCE consist of, but are not limited to:

Strength

• Sub-maximal force measure tests (ie floor to waist, waist to shoulder, above shoulder)
• Sub-maximal force measure tests (ie push, pull and carry)
• Grip strength test

Strength / Flexibility

• Double straight leg hold
• Hip flexors
• Lateral trunk lift

Endurance

• Cardiovascular
• CPAFLA step test
• Muscular
• Partial Curl-ups
• Push-ups

Flexibility / Range of Motion

• Sit and reach test

Body Posture

• Stooping
• Kneeling
• Crouching
• Balance – bilateral
• Fine dexterity
